How to Install an Artificial Grass Wall? Step-by-Step Guide

“Some people look for a beautiful house, others make a house beautiful.”

Are you looking for ideas to turn one of your rooms into a magical, inspiring space without having to paint or use wall paper? How about you create an artificial grass feature wall?

Just before the lockdown, I decided to give the storefront of the family’s alterations business a makeover. It was a boring, uninviting and lifeless space that consisted of two elements: white walls and concrete flooring. I wanted to create a welcoming space, and my plan was to install artificial grass walls and create a floral design that greets the customers as they enter the shop. It was my very first major decorating project; a huge undertaking to say the least, but it was really worth all the pain.

In this blog post, I will share with you the main steps in installing an artificial grass wall and the mistakes I made along the way in the aim that I can help you can avoid them.

First of all, in terms of the main material you need for this project, these are:

  • Artificial grass wall panels, which you can buy from ebay, and
  • Cables ties. Some eBay retailers will provide you with cable ties, if not, you can buy them from any hardware store.

So, how do you create an artificial grass wall?

Step 1: Take measurements

The first thing you’ll need to do is work out how many hedge panels you should purchase. I initially didn’t so roughly estimated how many panels I needed. That was my first mistake, because, as you can imagine, I had to re-order more artificial grass panels. Taking measurements of the wall is very important and when I say take measurements, I mean take measurements, properly! That’s something I also didn’t do, the first time around. Having to stop in the middle of a project and order supplies, then wait for them to arrive, is very frustrating. Don’t you agree? The good thing about making mistakes is that we can learn from them. And, I did. Before I made my second order,  I spent some time working out a formula, if you I can call it as such, to know the number of grass panels I needed to order. I had a window on one wall and a door on the other, so having to work that out wasn’t a straightforward process, but, with the help of my loving parents, I finally managed to come up with a formula.

How to determine how many artificial grass panels you need?

Here’s what I did:

  • Measure the width of the wall and divide it by the width of the grass panel. For example, if the wall measured 156 cm in width and the grass panel was 46 cm in width, 136/46cm = 4 mats. (If you end up with decimals you might need to round up the number.)
  • Measure the length of the wall and divide it by the length of the grass panel.  If the wall was 180 cm in length and the grass mat was 15cm, then 180/15 = 12 mats.
  • Multiply the numbers together. Based on the above example, the number of mats needed would be: 4 x 12 = 48.

I want to note that, if you have one feature wall, and, you don’t have to work your way around a window or a door (as I did), then you can just measure the width of the wall and divide it by the width of the grass panel.

Step 2: Order the grass hedge panels online

I purchased my grass mats from eBay but you can also find them on aliexpress.

  • Buy in bulk. Most shops on eBay, that sell artificial grass panels, have a ‘Buy 1, 2, 3 and 4’ option, so you’ll get a discount if you buy more. Some sellers, on eBay will provide you with cable ties, others won’t.
  • Order more than you need. I highly recommend ordering a couple more extra panels simply because you might end up needing more than you initially planned. From my experience, it was a hassle to have to order twice and put my project on hold. If you didn’t need the extra panels, you can always return them and get a refund!

Step 3: Attach the panels using cable ties

Step 4: Install the artificial grass wall

After you’ve tied all the panels with cable ties, you’ll need to hammer nails on the wall to hang the grass wall. You can also hammer nails in between the panels to secure it and make sure that it lies flat on the wall. I was able to do that for one of the walls but not both of them, unfortunately.

How long will it take to install an artificial grass wall?

  • Allow for a day or two to complete this project. This is not a complex project but it will take time to assemble the artificial grass panels and install them. How much time it takes will also depend on the space you’re working with. I installed the panels on 2 walls and it took me longer than expected because I had to re-order grass panels. If you have one wall to cover and all the panels you need, it’ll take about a day.
  • Get some help. I am so grateful for my dad because I wouldn’t have been able to complete this project on my own. Once attached, the panels weighed heavily, so having someone to help is a great advantage!
